Gaited horses

I don't understand why gaited horses are not more widespread. It seems like there's no significant downside and plenty of upside. Allegedly in the middle ages, they cost 10 times what a non-gaited horse cost, but the costs seem approximately equivalent nowadays. In particular, Tennessee Walkers seem to have a wonderful gentle personality (OK, I'm biased).

Gaited horses are not simple - it's akin to driving a manual/stick shift car, rather than an automatic. I'm still a beginner, working with my 6 year old Tennessee Walker, Thorn. This book was very helpful in explaining things to me: Easy Gaited Horses (Lee Ziegler)
